Migraine World Summit 2017: Preview

The Migraine World Summit starts in only 2 days! Maybe you won't be able to watch every session, but here is a bit of a preview of what's coming.

By the way, remember that this summit was made for migraine patients and those who care about them. One thing that organizers have done to help us is to give us free access to all the sessions for 24 hours. Of course, you still have to have tickets - which are 100% free.

Here are some sessions to watch for:
  • Top 10 Migraine Myths to Bust (Dr. Peter Goadsby): Make sure your family and friends have tickets, and have them watch this one, by one of the world's foremost migraine experts! It's the very first session on Sunday. (Meanwhile, see a video interview with Dr. Goadsby right now: The "Revolution" in Migraine Treatment)
  • Migraine Genetics: Unlocking a Cure for Migraine (Professor Lyn Griffiths): I've appreciated Lyn Griffiths' work for a long time - check out this article for a warm up to this session - Migraine Genetics – What if...?
  • How To Build A Good Relationship With Your Doctor (Kerrie Smyres): This is one of the most important and overlooked topics in migraine treatment. How do I find a good doctor? How can we really work together to find real solutions? This is the last session on Monday.
  • Rare Migraine Types: Vestibula, Hemiplegic, Complicated (Dr. David Dodick): Another well known expert I've appreciated for a long time (see a project he was recently involved in here). Many migraine/headache variants and special cases will be discussed at the summit - this session on Tuesday is only one example.
  • Breaking the Vicious Cycle of Chronic Migraine (Dr. William B. Young): Yes, please! Dr. Young is an extremely knowledgeable migraine expert, co-author of Migraine and Other Headaches, a book that has been a favourite in our community.
  • Best and Worst Supplements for Migraine (Dr. Andrea Harriott): Dr. Harriott is a neurologist and migraine specialist from the USA. This is an increasingly hot topic that we need to be up to date on.
  • Calling in Sick: An Employers Perspective of Migraine at Work (Brian Gifford): Gifford is the Director of Research for the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI), and as such he has access to a lot of interesting and practical information about the reality of migraine in the workplace. If you're struggling to talk to your employer about your condition, don't miss this talk.
  • Neuromodulation: New Devices That Can Ease Pain (Dr. Brian Grosberg): I've heard from a lot of people who have benefited from the many new devices being developed for migraine. But will they work for you? Which one? This is an important emerging area of treatment. Dr. Grosberg is a well respected headache specialist who can fill you in on Friday.
  • Live Expert Q&A (Dr. Andrew Charles, Dr. Dawn Buse, Francois Cadiou): Don't miss this time on Saturday to get questions answered that haven't been answered during the week. An interesting group on the panel - Dr. Charles is the Director of Headache Research and Treatment and Professor of Neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Buse is the Director of Behavioral Therapy at the Montefiore Headache Center in New York. And Francois Cadiou is the CEO and co-founder of Healint, an organization focused on harnessing medical data with modern technology in order to find better answers to conditions such as migraine.
That's only a hint of what's to come! There are many, many more sessions covering many practical "how-to" topics, as well as information about up-coming and cutting-edge treatments. Everyone will find something helpful here, including people who do not themselves have migraine or headache, but know someone who does.

So grab your tickets today and I'll meet you at the Migraine World Summit!

Say what?! Behavioral Therapy

Some patients may shy away from the term "behavioral therapy" for migraine, thinking that it squarly places the blame on the patient for their symptoms. Actually, behavioral therapy (behavioural therapy) is something a lot bigger.

Behavioral therapy does, as the name suggests, seek to help a patient change their behaviour. This might involve learning, "rewarding" yourself, and imitating positive actions.

But in the case of headache disorders (and many other conditions), behavioral therapy is not so much about a "cure" as it is about "living well" with your condition. You may be able to lesson/eliminate symptoms, but also find better ways to improve your life in general through "life hacks" that you might not naturally think of.
